Sadler’s Wells’ annual dance taster festival Sadler’s Wells Sampled returns for 2019, featuring world-class performances and a series of workshops and activities on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 February. A regular fixture at Sadler’s Wells since 2007, Sadler’s Wells Sampled showcases a wide variety of dance, from ballet to waacking, and contemporary dance to classical Indian dance. Gandini Juggling and Alexander Whitley
Gandini Juggling’s collaboration with contemporary choreographer Alexander Whitley Spring is an exhilarating cross-artform enquiry into the nature of colour and how we perceive it. The show comes to Sadler’s Wells as part of the London International Mime Festival from 31 January to 2 February. A hip hop theatre company – Body Politic – is raising awareness about mental health problems in men and boys through its show Father Figurine. Spring will see a UK tour, combining spoken word poetry with hip hop dance. 2019 sees Yolande Yorke-Edgell’s contemporary ballet company Yorke Dance Project celebrating its 20th anniversary. Yorke-Edgell set up her company in Los Angeles in 1999, relaunching it when she returned to London 2009. Since then, the company has attracted increasing acclaim for presenting dance by past masters and emerging artists from the UK and the USA, performed by exceptional dancers. What Brexit means for dance
A report published by One Dance UK claims that Brexit will have a detrimental effect on dance in the UK without the right safeguards in place. The report, titled Movement Beyond Borders – The UK Dance Sector Outlook on Brexit, is the result of research, conversations and discussions with One Dance UK members and stakeholders that have taken place since the June 2016 EU Referendum, and it draws on insights gained through a recent survey of major dance organisations and individual dance artists. Equity launches Dance Passport
6 November saw a new Dance Passport launched, following the final event of the European project Dance Futures – Creating Transition Schemes for Dancers and Promoting Sustainable Mobility in the Dance Sector, the European group of the International Federation of Actors.
