The Birmingham Weekender

The full programme for Birmingham’s biggest arts festival has been announced, taking place from 22 – 24 September. Across the city over three days, there will be 120 performances, 300 artists and 26 new commissions. It will be a cultural adventure for audiences, with some special treats for dance lovers too. The award-winning Birmingham Weekender promises a packed weekend of free outdoor theatre, music, art installations and performance. With opportunities to take part and watch as the weekend unfolds, the city’s streets, shops and squares will come alive with something to entertain and delight all the family. Stan Hodgson’s The Letter Room

Stanley Hodgson trained at LAMDA. Recent credits include: James and the Giant Peach (Northern Stage); Manifesto for a New City (Northern Stage/Live Theatre); Much Ado About Nothing (RSC); Breakfast Hearts/Choirplay (The Six Twenty/Live Theatre); Rum, Sodomy and the Lash (Channel 4). World Ballet Day 2017

Taking place on 5 October, World Ballet Day 2017 will work with the Australian, Bolshoi, Royal, Canadian and San Francisco Ballet companies to being international audiences the best possible online experience of the art form. Five of the world’s leading ballet companies will come together for World Ballet Day to consequently broadcast 20 hours of live, behind-the-scenes footage via Facebook Live.

Nicholas Le Riche to join Royal Swedish Ballet

It was recently announced that Nicolas Le Riche will direct Royal Swedish Ballet from the beginning of autumn 2017, having signed a five year contract with the Royal Swedish Opera to join as the new ballet director. This new collaboration will see Le Riche work with the company on both classical ballet and contemporary dance, having done with same with Paris Opera Ballet. Le Riche will success Johannes Öhman, who will go on to direct Staatsballett Berlin.

Cesar Corrales – newest Principal of English National Ballet

Tamara Rojo CBE, Artistic Director of English National Ballet, announced last month that Cesar Corrales was to become a Principal of English National Ballet from the start of the 2017/2018 season. Having joined English National Ballet as Artist of the Company in 2014, Corrales was promoted to Junior Soloist in 2015, and to First Soloist in 2016. At just 20 years old, Corrales will become English National Ballet’s youngest principal.

New radio programme for regional theatre

The BBC has recently unveiled a new radio programme which is dedicated solely to regional theatre. Radio 4’s Opening Night will visit a different UK town or city each month and meet the actors, writers and directors working on local professional productions. The plans for the news show followed an announcement of a regional theatre show last year, to showcase the wealth of talent in that area of theatre. For most audiences this form of theatre makes up the majority of their theatre-going habit.
