New artistic director for National Youth Dance Company

National Youth Dance Company, the country’s flagship organisation for young dancers which is run by Sadler’s Wells, will work with renowned choreographer Sharon Eyal as the next Guest Artistic Director of the company. NYDC continues its search for the next intake of 30 young dancers to join the company for 2017-18, and work with Eyal to create a new dance production, with Experience Workshops taking place across England throughout July. Mikhail Baryshnikov – special guest of National Ballet of Canada

Ballet legend Mikhail Baryshnikov recently attended National Ballet of Canada’s MAD HOT BALLET: Northern Lights, this year’s annual fundraising gala for the company. Baryshnikov was a special guest of the company last month, celebrating Canada’s 150th anniversary. Baryshnikov has always been hugely supportive of the company, and of close friend Karen Kain’s work, as Artistic Director of National Ballet of Canada. Boys take centre stage for Royal Academy of Dance

Boys have taken centre stage in the Royal Academy of Dance’s drive to attract more male dancers, recently launching Project B to increase the proportion of boys taking part in dance activities by 2020. Project B will include a range of initiatives to widen access to dance for boys and encourage more to take up ballet, firing up boys’ imaginations with new dance partnerships inspired by sports and superheroes. Male role models have been recruited for the initiative, including Principal Dancers Iain Mackay (Scottish Ballet) and Alexander Campbell (The Royal Ballet). National Youth Dance Company summer activities

National Youth Dance Company, the country’s flagship organisation for young dancers, has been performing Tarantiseismic around the country this summer, a new creation by the company’s Guest Artistic Director Damien Jalet. Tarantiseismic sees Jalet present a unique piece of theatre which addresses themes of melancholia, ritual, control and abandon, and the company’s 39 young dancers will tour to Plymouth, Newcastle, Leicester, Birmingham, Ipswich and Hull, as well as Latitude Festival.

Elmhurst Ballet School’s summer show programme

Elmhurst Ballet School, the associate school of Birmingham Royal Ballet, will perform Summer Variations as its summer show programme for 2017. The shows will take place at Elmhurst’s studio theatre in the school’s Birmingham home from 7-14 July. As part of the performance, David Bintley CBE, Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet, will choreograph his first work for the school, and Sir Frederick Ashton’s Explosions Polka will be performed for the first time in over thirty years.

Dorrance Dance UK premiere

Groundbreaking tap dancer and choreographer Michelle Dorrance will bring her company, Dorrance Dance, to Sadler’s Wells in London this summer, with the UK Premiere of ETM: Double Down. Opening on 12 July, the piece brings tap into the age of electronic music with collaborator Nicholas Van Young and electronic tap boards. Every step sets off an element of sound, building musical loops and turning the stage into a musical instrument too.
